The Role and Impact of Digitalization on Fashion Heritage

By addressing the constraints imposed by artefact fragility, this course explores the role of digitisation in the preservation, accessibility, and study of fashion heritage. Technologies such as reverse engineering and 3D modeling enable faithful virtual replicas, reducing manipulation and expanding their usability. Additionally, digitisation facilitates international exchange, comparative analysis and academic research. Furthermore, digital data transforms into investigative tools that reveal new information, enriching the historical and material knowledge of the artifacts.

The manufacturing of textiles, which forms the basis of fashion, accessories, and furnishings precede fashion in the traditional sense. Textile archives need particular consideration, the right tools and a focused archival setup because they are frequently less regarded than fashion shows and designers. Despite the technical difficulties posed by artificial intelligence, the textile archive continues to be seen as a legitimate business “department,” contributing to productivity and identity formation.
